Isamaru, Hound of Konda

Legendary Creature — DogWhite mana

A vanilla 2/2 for a single white mana, with nothing in the text box but a name and a legend supertype. That was the whole pitch, and it landed because white had rarely been allowed a one-drop that hit this hard without strings attached. What it proved was that a creature could be exciting on rate alone: no enters-the-battlefield trigger, no protection, no evasion, just two power for one mana at a point in white's history when that math was uncommon enough to be a selling point. Aggressive white decks happily ran the full four copies; the legend rule only bites when you already control a copy and a second resolves, so the redundancy stings only in the rare flooded hand, and those were rarely the games you were losing. The design lineage runs forward from here. Later cards would pile keywords and abilities onto the one-drop slot, but this is the clean reference point, the demonstration that a body and a number can carry a card when the number is good enough. The flavor does its share too: a single hound rendered as a legendary creature is the kind of joke-that-isn't that Kamigawa's mythology delighted in, a named animal companion standing shoulder to shoulder with daimyo and dragon-spirits. It remains the template every aggressive white one-drop gets measured against, the bottom of the curve where raw efficiency stops being a bonus and becomes the entire reason the card exists.
