Insolence

Enchantment — Aura2 generic manaRed mana

Punishment for tapping, which is a strange axis for a red card to attack. Most red enchantments and burn spells deal their damage once and walk away; this one keys on a recurring event, dealing 2 damage to the enchanted creature's controller every time that creature taps. The design idea is to make a creature's own usefulness hurt its controller: attacking, fueling a mana ability, or paying any tap cost becomes a 2-damage tax on the player. The friction is obvious and fatal to the card's ambitions. The opponent simply leaves the creature untapped and the Aura sits inert. Blocking does not tap a creature, so a defensive body dodges Insolence entirely, and a creature with no tap-based abilities pays nothing for as long as its controller is content to hold it back. That makes this a soft incentive rather than removal, a way to discourage a single creature's activity instead of answering it. The lineage is the red punisher tradition, the same school as Manabarbs, where the card hands the opponent a choice and tries to make both options unpleasant. The trouble here is that the choice is rarely close: an opponent who never needed to tap that creature loses nothing, so the damage only lands against someone who was always going to attack anyway. The effect is real, but it taxes activity the opponent can usually decline to commit.
