Modal cards live or die on how many of their lines you'd actually want, and this one is built so all three matter at different points in the same game. Unkicked, it's a two-mana instant that does exactly one job: pump a blocker, gain a chunk of life off your biggest body, or pick a fight you know you'll win. That flexibility alone justifies the slot. The kicker is where the design turns from useful to punishing. Paying the extra doesn't upgrade one mode; it hands you all of them at once, and the free targeting means you can point each line at a different creature or player. Dump two counters on your attacker, fight down an opposing creature, and gain life off the same board, all at instant speed, all in response to a block or an alpha strike. That's the interaction that makes it a genuine blowout rather than a value spell: the fight line resolves as a combat trick your opponent can't play around, because the counters and the lifegain arrive in the same instant. Green's answer to opposing creatures has always leaned on the fight mechanic's awkwardness (you need a creature, and it takes damage back). This folds that awkwardness into a package where the counters offset the damage and the lifegain pads the exchange, so the fight stops being a fair trade and becomes a one-sided one.
