Innocent Blood

SorceryBlack mana

Edicts force a sacrifice but hand the choice to the creature's controller, which is what makes them so hard to play around: you cannot bluff your way out, and an indestructible or protected body offers no shelter because nothing is targeted or destroyed. This is the cleanest version of that effect at the cheapest cost, and it bills everyone at the table, the caster included. That symmetry is the price. The reward is engineering the asymmetry around it, something black has spent decades learning to do. The math runs the opposite way from a destroy spell: when you hold the weaker board, the trade favors you, because you feed the edict a token or a mana dork while the opponent must give up their only real threat. The danger is the mirror of that, when the opponent is the one holding fodder: they sacrifice something expendable and you surrender your one blocker for nothing. So the spell rewards either an empty board of your own against a mono-threat opponent, or a board stocked with bodies you were happy to lose.

The effect has been refined many times since. Diabolic Edict and Geth's Verdict move the choice onto opposing players only, at a higher rate, to erase the symmetry entirely. The version that taxes everyone, the caster among them, at the lowest cost the effect has ever carried, remains the most aggressive bargain in the family.
