The pump scales with cards in hand, which sets up a contradiction the card never fully resolves: it wants you holding a full grip, but casting it is itself the act of spending one. Six cards in hand and it reads as an enormous swing; an empty hand and it adds nothing at all. Carrying the Arcane type tied it to the splice machinery of its era, so the natural home was a spells-matter shell that kept refilling the hand rather than emptying it: a deck flooded with cards is exactly the deck that turns this into a reliable finisher instead of a feast-or-famine gamble. The instant speed matters more than the rate suggests, since it lets you hold up the threat as a combat ambush or a way to punish a removal spell mid-block. The catch is that hand size is public, so the opponent can already see the ceiling before you reach for it; the surprise lives in the timing, not the magnitude. Most pump spells of this vintage paid for their power with a fixed, knowable number, and this one keeps that legibility while handing the ceiling to the rest of your deck. The result is a payoff card wearing a combat trick's clothes: legible in its math, unbounded in its potential, and only ever as large as the board you have refused to commit.
