Inferno Trap

Four mana for four damage to a single creature is a rate nobody would touch, which is exactly the point: the printed cost is a decoy, and the real price is the single red mana you pay once you have been dealt damage by two or more creatures in a turn. That condition is the entire design, and it is also where the card breaks down. The discount only comes online once two or more creatures have already dealt you damage, most often after blockers have resolved and your opponent's creatures have already connected. You cannot hold the cheap version up against the declaration of attackers and threaten it; the bargain exists only once the damage is already on your life total. The deeper problem is whose hands the trigger lives in. The discount is gated on the attacker's behavior, and the attacker has every reason to deny it: a careful player swings with one creature, never feeds the second, and leaves you sitting on a four-mana removal spell you would never cast at full freight. This is the structural flaw in reactive, opponent-gated costs across the whole experiment with conditional pricing: the savings get dangled in front of the one player with the strongest incentive not to trigger them. When a swing does pile in and you blow a hole in the surviving attackers for the cost of a cantrip, it feels like a heist. The rest of the time it is a dead card priced for a window the opponent controls.
