In the Presence of Ages

Instant2 generic manaGreen mana

Green's dig spells have always run into the same wall: green digs deep but wants to keep the cards, and letting it hand-pick from four at instant speed is a rate the color rarely gets to keep. The compromise here is a filter on what comes home. You see four, but only a creature and a land make it to your hand; everything else fills the graveyard. That narrowing buys the instant speed and the two-card haul. It presumes a certain deck, one that treats its own library as a resource and its graveyard as a second hand: reanimation targets, delve fuel, escape and disturb enablers, anything that would rather be milled than drawn. The card's real trick is that it collapses two green impulses into one motion on the stack. It refills the board plan (a creature) and the mana plan (a land) in a single flash-speed cast, then loads the yard with the discards. Read as pure card advantage it looks middling, since two of the four cards you reveal vanish from your reach. Read as a graveyard-and-selection engine it does something green usually cannot: dig and enable at once, on the opponent's turn, without asking you to trade tempo for the privilege.
