The body is incidental: a 1/1 that dies to a stiff breeze is fine when the real card is the search it triggers on entry. What makes it a fixture of creature combo is that it tutors to hand rather than to the battlefield, so it threads through every blink, reanimation, and flicker engine that wants the trigger again, and it finds the missing piece of a creature loop without committing it to the table where removal can answer it. The phrase "Recruiter effect" is now shorthand for this exact design: a cheap creature whose entry tutors a small creature to hand, a template Wizards has revisited in other colors precisely because this one proved how much consistency a strict power cap can grant a combo deck without lifting the cap that keeps the search honest.
