A red Aura that shrinks what it pumps is a design joke that doubles as a real tool: the +2/-2 split turns a buff into a removal spell against any creature with two toughness or less, which drops to zero and dies the instant it resolves. The dual nature is the whole point. Hung on your own high-toughness body, +2/-2 reads as a straight aggression buff that the creature can absorb without dying, so the same Aura that kills a small enemy attacker can swing combat math on a bigger one of yours. The cost is the Aura tax: card disadvantage if the targeted creature dies in response, and a ceiling on what it can profitably remove (a three-toughness creature merely shrinks to 1, lethal only once it has already taken a point of damage). This is not red's answer to clean creature kill; Lightning Bolt already owned that role from Alpha, and an instant-speed three damage does the job without committing a card to the battlefield. Immolation is the slower, jankier cousin: a removal effect smuggled in under a power bonus, which is exactly the kind of indirect design the early sets reached for before red's removal vocabulary settled. The Aura-as-shrink pattern later found cleaner homes in colors where it fit the pie, Weakness in black chief among them. What you have here is a Legends-era curio: a workable kill spell wearing the costume of a pump aura.
