Illusionary Mask

Artifact2 generic mana

The strangest rules object Alpha printed, and the one that took the game's templating engine the longest to catch up to. The design intent was straight from the era's love affair with hidden information: pay X, slide a creature card from your hand onto the table face down as a 2/2, and reveal it only when something forces the question (it assigns or deals damage, is dealt damage, or becomes tapped). In practice this produced a generation of judge calls and a rules engine the game would not properly support until morph arrived in Onslaught a decade later, with a clean keyword, a fixed cost, and a defined turn-face-up trigger. The card's real legacy is that retrofit: morph is the disciplined version of what this artifact was gesturing at, and the modern face-down rules exist in the shape they do because Wizards had to make sense of this card first. It also anchored one of the game's earliest degenerate two-card kills, pairing with Phyrexian Dreadnought: cast face down, the Dreadnought sidesteps its own enters-the-battlefield sacrifice clause entirely, then flips up as a 12/12 when it attacks or blocks. That line still functions under modern rules, which is part of why the artifact has cycled through restriction and bans across multiple eras. It survives now as an artifact in both senses: a relic of the period when Magic's rules were still being discovered rather than designed.

Rules text

X generic mana: You may choose a creature card in your hand whose mana cost could be paid by some amount of, or all of, the mana you spent on X generic mana. If you do, you may cast that card face down as a 2/2 creature spell without paying its mana cost. If the creature that spell becomes as it resolves has not been turned face up and would assign or deal damage, be dealt damage, or become tapped, instead it's turned face up and assigns or deals damage, is dealt damage, or becomes tapped. Activate only as a sorcery.
