Ice Storm

Sorcery2 generic manaGreen mana

Alpha's land destruction was priced as a color-pie statement, and this is the cleanest artifact of that statement. Green, in 1993, was understood as the color of the natural world reclaiming the works of civilization, and that flavor was translated into rules with a heavy hand: for three mana, a sorcery that simply removes one land, no upside, no kicker, no tempo sweetener. The rate looks punishing now (Stone Rain set the red baseline at the same cost, and Sinkhole did the work a pip cheaper in black), and the design choice to put targeted land destruction in green at all has not aged well. Within a few years Wizards had walked green's land hate toward conditional or broader answers (Creeping Mold could hit lands but also artifacts and enchantments; Desert Twister cost a fortune to keep the effect honest), and the staple flat-rate version migrated to red and stayed there. What this card represents is the period before those guardrails existed, when each color got its own version of the staple effects and the pie was sorted out by cost rather than by scope. Green never got clean, cheap land destruction back at this rate; the design space simply moved colors. Reading the card now is reading a color-pie draft from before the pie was finished.
