Damage prevention that reads on the player rather than a creature is a rare seat to occupy, and the shape of this one is the story. Most protective effects in white either fog a single attack, gate off a keyword, or hand out shields to permanents; this instead installs a standing ceiling on incoming damage, reducing any source's hit to you or a Hero you control down to a single point. That "all but 1" clause is the discipline: it does not make you invulnerable. Damage-based threats do get clipped even when they trail secondary effects, so an infect source still connects for the damage it deals but is reduced to a single point (and thus a single poison counter). What escapes the cap is the harm that never becomes damage at all: pure life-loss and drain effects, edict-style sacrifices, and mill route around it, and a wide enough board of small pings still chips you down. What it neutralizes is the burst: the alpha strike, the one big Fireball, the commander swinging for a game's worth of damage in a single hit all collapse to one. Flash and flying let the body land as an ambush blocker at instant speed, which means the protection and a relevant threat arrive on the same turn you decide you need them, not a turn early where they telegraph the plan. A static, source-agnostic damage cap reshapes how an opponent is allowed to attack you at all.
