Hurr Jackal
Tap-to-shut-off-regeneration is a hate ability aimed at a single, very specific mechanic, and the design only makes sense in the context of the era that printed it. Regeneration was everywhere in early Magic: Drudge Skeletons, Will-o'-the-Wisp, Sedge Troll, and El-Hajjâj all shared the same sheets. A one-mana 1/1 that can answer any of them by simply existing and tapping is a sharp piece of sideboard-shaped technology stapled to a maindeck body, with the catch that the activation does no damage and leaves the creature alive until something else finishes it. The jackal is a setup piece for a burn spell or a blocker, not a removal spell in its own right. What has aged is not the rate but the target: as regeneration was quietly phased out of new design in favor of indestructible and cleaner death triggers, and "dies" became a keyword that matters in its own right, the ability lost most of its referents. The card preserves a moment when "can't be regenerated" was a rider you would actually pay a whole card for, not a line of reminder text bolted to the back of better removal. Strip away the regeneration ecosystem it was built to attack and what remains is a single-purpose artifact: a creature whose only job was to argue against the assumption that regeneration was the default way creatures survived combat.
