Countermagic has almost always been pure denial: you spend your mana, they lose theirs, and the exchange leaves your board no better than it was. This one attaches a payoff scaled to the very thing it kills. Counter their five-drop and you dig for something worth up to five; counter a larger threat and the reward climbs with it, so the ceiling is set by your opponent's ambition rather than your own. That inversion is the design idea, and it changes how the spell reads on the stack. Discover here is not the random top-of-library rummage it is elsewhere; the exile-until-hit clause functions as guaranteed selection tied to a known ceiling, and because you may cast the found card free or bank it in hand, a whiffed dig is not a wasted one. The five-mana price and the artifact-or-creature restriction keep the trade honest: it cannot answer the burn spell or board wipe aimed at your face, and it is slow enough that the real tempo swing rides on the discovered card, not on the counter itself. This belongs among the counterspells that refuse to be dead cards when they resolve, the ones that leave you holding a body or a card rather than an empty hand, and it pushes that idea further by collapsing the answer and the payoff into a single act.
