Honor's Reward

Two half-cards stapled at the seam, with bolster the stitch holding them together. The instant-speed window is what elevates this above its parts: held up through combat, the four life can swing a race while the two counters settle onto a survivor after blocks resolve. Bolster removes the targeting burden by aiming the reinforcement automatically at your frailest body, so you never have to leave a creature back or otherwise set up to make the counters land somewhere useful. That built-in restriction is also the ceiling. The mechanic limits your choice about placement: both counters go to a creature with the least toughness, which means the threat you actually want to grow gets nothing unless it happens to be that smallest thing. And since both counters land on a single body, this is a clumsy fit for any plan that wants to inflate one specific creature and a natural fit for a wide board where the tiniest survivor is a fine place to spend them. The lifegain-plus-counters pairing reads like incidental value, but it is tuned for the white midrange plan that stabilizes and then converts that stability into board presence in one end step: gain enough to drop out of burn range, then leave behind a creature two sizes larger than the opponent had accounted for. Honest rather than exciting, and it wants a board wide enough to always have a worthwhile creature to grow.
