Hoar Shade

Creature — Shade3 generic manaBlack mana

The shade template at its plainest: a small body stapled to a mana sink, asking nothing of you but black mana left over to spend. The lineage runs back to Frozen Shade and forward through every shade Wizards has printed since, all variations on the same loop of pumping a creature with floating mana until it swings for lethal or trades up. The body is undersized on purpose, so the pump ability carries the entire value proposition, and the rate on that ability (one mana for +1/+1, repeatable, no ceiling) sits low enough that it never dominates a board without a real mana commitment behind it. What keeps the shade a durable design rather than a curiosity is that it scales with the game: it lands as an unimpressive 1/2 with no immediate impact, but as untapped lands accumulate it becomes a clock that punishes any opponent who taps out against it. The catch is that every point of growth costs a card's worth of tempo in mana, and the swelling vanishes once the turn ends, so the shade rewards a deck that wants to dump mana into a single threat rather than develop a wide board. Nothing about this particular printing sets it apart from its siblings; it is the archetype in its most unadorned form.
