The conditional dual that solved the painland's bleed. For years, two-color fixing in the older guilds came at a cost paid in life: the painlands took a point every time you needed colored mana, the original duals were too scarce to lean on, and tapped-land cycles charged tempo unconditionally. This design splits the difference by making the tempo cost conditional. Control a Forest or an Island and the land arrives untapped, ready to cast on curve; control neither and it enters tapped, the penalty for a manabase that has not yet committed to either of its colors. The elegant part is what the condition checks for: the land types Forest and Island, not the dual itself, so anything carrying those types satisfies it. A basic Forest does, but so does a Breeding Pool or an original dual, which lets these check-lands stack into deeper manabases without fighting each other. Because the requirement is a static condition tested as the land enters, not a clock that ticks each turn, it softens with every land you play rather than every turn that passes: the only copy that reliably comes down tapped is the one you lead on, before any Forest or Island is in play. It rewards a deck built around its colors without taxing the deck that already is one: no life, no permanent tempo hit, just an honest demand that you build toward the colors you claimed to be playing. The Simic version is the green-blue option for every two-color shell that wants to play fair.
