Hinterland Drake

Creature — Drake2 generic manaBlue mana

A 2/3 flyer for three mana is the most ordinary thing in blue's defensive toolkit, which is exactly why the restriction is the whole design: this creature can't block artifact creatures. That clause is cost-by-context, a way to take a clean evaluation and bend it around what the rest of the format is fielding. The body never changes; its value does. In a metagame full of fleshy attackers it walls off the small ground threats in its weight class, eating 2/2s and trading evenly with 3/2s while patrolling the air against anything its size or under. In a metagame thick with metal threats it loses the one lane that matters and turns into a one-way flyer that has to win the race rather than stall it. The downside is surgical: it touches defense and leaves offense untouched, which quietly steers the card toward proactive blue strategies that would rather attack with a flyer than sit behind it. The restriction is a soft tax, not a hard one, since plenty of the creatures it wants to wall off are perfectly ordinary flesh. What makes the design worth a second look is how cleanly it isolates a single weakness: a common-rarity body whose entire power band is determined by the ratio of artifact creatures to everything else in the environment around it.
