Highland Lake

Land

The plainest fixing template Wizards has: a two-color tapland with no upside beyond the colors it produces, the deliberate floor against which every other dual is measured. The tradeoff is entirely front-loaded into the enters-tapped clause; you pay a tempo tax on the turn it arrives and nothing else thereafter. That makes it a known quantity, the kind of land that fills out a manabase when consistency matters more than speed and the deck can afford to lose a tempo somewhere in the early turns. It sits in a long line of cycles that revive this exact design across sets, each one keying to the format's color pairs: cheap, guaranteed, untapped from turn two onward. The Izzet entry in any such cycle does the same structural work as its allied and enemy siblings, which is why it tends to disappear into a list rather than define one. There is no second ability to leverage, no land type to fetch with, no payoff for sequencing it carefully beyond playing it early enough that the tapped turn does not hurt. What it offers is reliability at the cost of a single beat, and for decks built around a slower clock that is exactly the bargain they want.
