Hell-Bent Raider

Creature — Human Barbarian1 generic manaRed manaRed mana

A 2/2 with first strike and haste is already an awkward block, but the activated ability is the design intent: pay a card at random and the creature gains protection from white until end of turn. That clause does the heavy lifting against a white deck, where it cannot be targeted by white spells, cannot be blocked by white creatures, and prevents white damage. A single activation flips an unfavorable race into an unanswerable one, dodging the removal and the chump-blocker in the same beat. The randomness is what keeps the ability honest: you do not get to pitch your worst card, you pitch whatever the top of your hand hands you, so the protection is never free insurance. That same randomness pins the card to a deck that treats discard as fuel rather than a tax, an aggressive shell built around the madness-and-discard era this comes from. What separates it from the run of vanilla red beaters around it is the color-pie pointing: the protection is aimed squarely at white, red buying a tactical edge against white aggression and white answers rather than a generic evasion grant. The ability is repeatable for as long as you have cards to feed it, which turns one creature into a recurring problem that an opponent's white removal simply cannot resolve.
