Hedron Crawler
A mana dork that produces colorless, which sounds like a downgrade from the green one-drops it superficially resembles until you remember what it was built to feed. Colorless mana is the resource that powers the Eldrazi: cards whose costs carry the diamond pip and refuse to accept the green or blue mana a Llanowar Elves or a Sylvan Caryatid would happily provide. That single restriction is also the card's strength. It is a colorless ramp piece, so any deck of any color can run it without bending its manabase, which makes it the connective tissue for strategies that want to skip ahead to enormous threats regardless of what else they are casting. The 0/1 body is honest about the trade: it offers nothing in combat and exists purely to be tapped, the artifact-creature equivalent of a mana rock that happens to be vulnerable to creature removal and able to crew or be sacrificed. The lineage is older than the colorless-matters mechanics it was printed alongside; ramp has always wanted the cheapest possible accelerant, and pricing one at two with no colored requirement and no color output is a clean way to give every deck access to the same engine. What it lacks is upside: it never grows, never produces extra, never does anything but the one thing. That austerity is precisely why it slots so easily.
