Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons
The whole engine hangs on a single conceptual swap: a -1/-1 counter, which black-green had long treated as pure removal, becomes generation. Drop a counter on a creature (an opponent's, to shrink or kill it; your own, to feed some other counter payoff) and a deathtouch Snake falls out the bottom. The second trigger cares specifically that the object receiving the counter is a creature, so a counter placed on a planeswalker or a plain artifact does nothing, while an artifact creature still mints its Snake. That tether to creatures is what keeps the engine grounded in board interaction rather than abstract counter math. And because the trigger reads "one or more," the reward is for spreading wide: a spell that puts a single counter on each of several creatures fires Hapatra once per creature, so a board-wide shrink like Black Sun's Zenith can spill out a whole snake pit from one cast. The combat clause is the slower, fairer half, minting one Snake per connection off a body that has to survive to swing. Neither half stands alone; the counters are removal that build a board, and the board defends the counters. Plenty of black-green commanders convert attrition into advantage, but most of them spend resources to grind. This one turns the act of removal itself into a body, which is the rarer trick, wrapped in a two-drop frame cheap enough to deploy early and fragile enough to fold to a single removal spell before it ever attacks.
