A 1/5 with Defender is built to stall: a wall that absorbs the early beats while you set up the rest of your board. But the flip clause weaponizes that patience against you. To trigger the front face, the entire table has to go silent for a full turn, which is the last thing a developing player wants to do. So the protective body and the path to changing it pull in opposite directions: keeping the wall requires you to keep deploying, and earning the upgrade requires everyone to stop. The reward for that silence is not really an upgrade so much as a hostage swap. The back side sheds Defender and gains the compulsion to attack each combat it can, swinging into whatever sits across from it whether or not that serves your plan. You hand over a controllable blocker and receive a beater you no longer steer. And the way back is no easier to engineer, because the night side only reverts when a player floods the turn with spells, the exact behavior that was off the table while you were trying to flip it. This is the day-night seesaw the entire early werewolf line runs on, but channeled through the defender-to-attacker axis: the card that shields you and the card that commits you are one object, and which one you hold depends entirely on how restrained the table is willing to be.
