Hans Eriksson

A joke made real. Hans Eriksson is the punchline to a decades-old scrap of flavor text on Grizzly Bears, the hapless scout who led the party into the woods but never made it out; the mechanics honor the gag without flinching. He attacks, flips a creature straight into combat, and then that creature wheels around and mauls him. His four toughness on a one-power frame is the tuning knob for the whole engine: it survives fighting most small creatures, letting the cheat-into-play trigger fire again and again, but the fight clause bites for real. Reveal a creature with four or more power and Hans takes lethal from his own ability, since his toughness leaves no cushion. That tension prices the effect honestly, so free bodies never arrive for nothing. The trigger also sidesteps the timing problem that kills most reanimator-adjacent shells: the creature enters tapped and attacking, dodging the sorcery-speed exposure of hardcasting a fatty and hoping it lives to the next combat. Everything hinges on knowing what sits above your next draw, so Hans works less like a beater than like a payoff built into the deck backward, every card ordered toward the flip. A man being repeatedly clawed by the monsters he conjures doubles as the mechanical heart of the card: a rare instance of rules and flavor telling one story.
