Gut Shot

InstantRed or Phyrexian mana

One damage is rarely worth a card, but the optional cost rewrites the math: the spell asks for no mana at all if you have two life to spare. That zero-cost line is the whole reason the card exists. A point of damage at instant speed wins races against the cheapest threats in the game (the one-toughness mana dorks, the early aggressive one-drops, the hatebears that tax a turn), and paying with life instead of mana means you can hold up a counter, develop your board, and still snipe a blocker or finish a creature mid-combat without spending tempo. The trick is that "free" is conditional in two directions: the life payment is real damage to your own clock, and the damage scales down hard as creatures grow, so the card is sharpest in the opening turns and dead weight by the midgame. It reads as a footnote and plays as a scalpel for combo and tempo decks that need to clear exactly one cheap blocker on the turn they go off, or answer an opposing one-drop without ever tapping out. The optional payment is what makes that timing possible: a removal spell whose mana cost can be skipped entirely belongs to whoever can afford the life, and against the right small target, that is one of the best rates in the game.
