Gruul Signet

Artifact2 generic mana

Pay one and tap, get two back: that is the math the Signet cycle codified, and the +1 net is precisely what makes these rocks earn a slot. The bargain reads as fixing because the gain is small and color-locked, but it is genuine acceleration: deploy on turn two, then every activation converts a generic mana into one red and one green, leaving you a mana ahead and dead on color. The restraint lives in the cost to fire it. Earlier two-mana rocks tended toward extremes, free mana that risked breaking aggressive decks, or rocks that entered tapped and cost a tempo to set up. This generation threaded between them: cheap to play, untaxed on entry, and self-limiting because each tap demands a mana you have to already have. That keeps it from chaining into explosive turns while still nudging your curve forward and smoothing two-color access. The Gruul pairing sits a little crosswise to its own identity. Red-green is the color combination least inclined to grind out the long games where a slow fixer-ramp piece compounds, and most inclined to spend two early mana on a creature instead. So it does its best work the same place every Signet does: in decks deep enough in colors that reliable RG production justifies the card, rather than in the aggressive shells the guild's name suggests.
