Grim Wanderer

Creature — Goblin Warlock1 generic manaBlack mana

The bargain here is a body wildly out of line with its cost, unlocked only by a condition the card cannot guarantee on its own. A 5/3 for 1 generic manaBlack mana lands at a rate that belongs several colors and a full turn away from where black usually reaches it, and the flash tag pushes that already-absurd body into an ambush window: you hold it up, wait for a block or a trade to send a creature to the graveyard, then flash in a five-power threat at instant speed. The Tragic Backstory clause is what balances the giveaway. Unlike a cost reduction that merely makes an expensive card cheaper, this is a hard gate: no creature has died this turn, no cast at all. It rewards decks already built to spill blood (sacrifice fodder, aristocrat shells, grindy attrition boards where something dies almost every turn as a matter of course) and punishes anyone hoping to jam it on curve into an empty board. The design is a study in how much stat line you can hand out once you make the payoff contingent on the game state rather than the mana spent. Left to a topdeck in the wrong moment it is a blank; slotted into a deck where death is a resource, it is a two-mana haymaker that arrives on the opponent's turn.
