The death trigger is what separates this from a generation of plain stat-boosting Auras. Aura-based aggression has always carried the same liability: the card-disadvantage cliff. Spend a card to pump a creature, watch the creature get killed, fall two cards behind on a single removal spell. The Griffin token answers that exact math. It doesn't make the Aura immune to removal; it makes removal a worse trade than it looks, since the controller still walks away with a 2/2 flier when the host dies. That converts the worst-case scenario (a clean two-for-one against you) into something closer to even, and it does the work without changing how the Aura plays while the creature is alive: still a flying threat, still a clock, still a reason to keep blockers home. The flying it grants is doing double duty, too, turning a ground creature into evasion now and seeding a flier later, so the effect reads as continuous rather than as two unrelated bonuses stapled together. This is the design template white kept refining for years afterward, the recognition that an Aura attached to mortal creatures needs a parachute, and that the parachute can itself apply pressure. The token's stats deliberately echo the most ordinary flying body in the game, which is the point: the floor on a dead investment is a perfectly serviceable creature, not a consolation prize.
