Grief Tyrant

The four -1/-1 counters are not a drawback so much as stored ammunition. They knock the printed 8/8 down to a 4/4 the moment it arrives, but the death trigger flings one counter onto a target creature for each one still riding the body when it dies. That turns the card into a deckbuilding puzzle rather than a static threat. Pump it past its counters and it swings as a real 8/8 while the trigger stays at full payload; pile on more -1/-1 counters from outside sources and the eventual detonation only gets heavier. The reward is a removal spell stapled to a beater: kill it on your own terms and a creature across the table eats four or more counters, often enough to die outright. The design runs on the same principle as a sacrifice payoff that converts its own destruction into a resource, except the resource here is permanent stat reduction rather than tokens or drain. The catch is the timing demand: you have to want it dead, and you have to control when, because the best turn it has is the one it does not survive. Left to attack and trade on its own, the counters are dead weight; sacrificed or chump-blocked at the right moment, they become the whole point.
