Flash is what separates this from the pile of permanent power-shrinking auras that came before it. Reducing power by three at instant speed turns it into a combat ambush: hold up two mana, let an attacker commit, then quietly defang the largest creature in the swing before damage. The -3/-0 spread is deliberate, too. It leaves toughness untouched, so the enchanted creature stays alive and stays a body, but a 3/3 attacker contributes nothing to the assault and a smaller one can no longer race or trade up. Power-only reduction also dodges the question that toughness reduction has to answer, namely whether the creature dies; instead it permanently parks an opposing threat as a blocker that cannot threaten, an answer that asks for no second card to clean up afterward. Compared to a removal spell, the math is different in kind: the creature is not gone, it is neutralized in one direction only, which is enough against the fatties the early multiplayer-leaning environments of this era were built to push out. The friction is that it only addresses combat math, not abilities or reach or any threat that wins outside the attack step, and it commits a card to the board where it can be answered. But for a two-cost trick that rewrites a block at the moment of declaration and stays attached to keep doing so, instant speed is what makes the trade worth holding open.
