Persist is the whole pitch: death buys a delayed encore, but the second life comes smaller and pays for itself. The returning body carries a -1/-1 counter, which shrinks it to a 2/2 and, more importantly, slams the door behind it. Kill it once and it stands back up; kill it again and the counter blocks the trigger, so it stays in the yard. That makes the card an attrition tax rather than an engine on its own terms: it demands two removal spells from an opponent and shrugs off the first, surrendering a point of stats for the privilege. Five mana buys repetition instead of raw size, which plants it firmly in the grind-it-out school of creature design rather than the tempo one. The hybrid pip is the quieter piece of the puzzle, letting the same Merfolk run in a mono-blue shell or a mono-black one without retooling the mana, a bridge between two identities that the era's hybrid experiments leaned on. It never wants to be the centerpiece; it fills out a sacrifice-and-recur deck, interchangeable with its persist cousins, and earns its slot only when the surrounding cards have a standing reason to want creatures dead and back again.
