Grave Exchange

Sorcery4 generic manaBlack manaBlack mana

Two black staples bolted together at a steep tax: graveyard recursion on one half, an edict on the other. The split is deliberate, since the two clauses can never overlap. The return targets a creature card in your graveyard, pulling it back to your hand; the sacrifice targets a player, who then chooses which of their own bodies to give up. That second clause is the weaker partner by design. Handing the choice to the opponent means they feed you their least valuable creature, so against a wide board of tokens or chaff it does almost nothing, while against a lone threat it functions as a kill, and against an empty board it accomplishes nothing at all. The return clause is the steadier value, recouping a creature that already died, the kind of attrition trade black has always paid full retail for. The friction is that the two halves prefer opposite game states: the recursion rewards a long grind with a stocked graveyard, the edict rewards a board where the opponent has exactly one body worth taking. The heavy price reflects an era when bundling a removal-flavored effect onto a card-advantage spell was treated as worth a tax rather than a discount. When both halves connect it is a clean two-for-one, but that connection is not guaranteed: the floor is a card-neutral hand refill with the sacrifice wasted, and the ceiling asks the board to arrange itself in a way it rarely does.
