The original fetch-land template, designed before the term existed. The deal it offers is deliberately worse than what came after, and the difference is one clause: this land enters tapped. That entry tap costs a turn of tempo up front, which is what relegates it to thinning-and-fixing work for slower decks rather than a tempo-neutral fetch. What it does cleanly is shuffle your library, fix between two colors, and trim a land from your deck, all without the life payment later fetches charge. The line of descent runs straight from here: the Onslaught cycle (Windswept Heath and its siblings) kept the sacrifice-and-search shell and the search for matching land types, dropped the entry tap, and added a one-life cost. That trade, tempo for a life total, explains why the later design supplanted this one in fast formats: a land that comes down untapped and immediately replaces itself is worth a point of life when every turn counts. The historical weight here is in the proof of concept: the idea that a land can pay for color fixing by removing itself from the deck, a principle Magic has refined for nearly three decades and never abandoned. Everything the modern fetch does, this one already did. It just charged the price in tempo instead of life, and that turned out to be the wrong currency.
