Grandmother Sengir

A repeatable shrink-ray, built before the design language for "pinger that fights creatures" had settled. The activated ability pairs a tap with a mana cost to hand out -1/-1 until end of turn, which against the small creatures of her era functions as patient removal: shave a point each turn and a 1/1 dies on the spot, or knock something already damaged below its remaining toughness. What keeps the rate honest is the tap symbol welded to the mana payment: it costs you, and it is one activation per turn unless you find an external untap effect, because the tap line means you cannot fire it twice and the bonus expires at end of turn anyway. So the card does not snowball through wide boards; it grinds one creature at a time, which is exactly the tempo a control-minded body wants. The -1/-1 also reaches past combat math into edge cases: it can shut off a toughness-based ability or push a creature under a counter threshold. The body is fragile for the cost and the ability is the point, a removal engine stapled to a creature rather than a one-shot spell. As a matriarch of the Sengir vampire dynasty in the storyline (alongside Baron Sengir and Lord Sengir), she is one of the few cards from her set that carries real flavor weight: a black legend whose mechanical job, slowly wearing down the opposing board, matches her role as a patient, controlling elder.
