Grand Coliseum

Land

City of Brass with a relief valve: take the one damage when you need any color, or tap for colorless and keep your life total intact. That second mode is the whole conceit, and it tracks a real shift in how Wizards thought about painlands across the early 2000s. The original Apocalypse painland cycle (Shivan Reef and friends) offered the colorless-versus-painful choice for two colors at a time; City of Brass dropped the colorless option entirely and charged a life for every tap, no exceptions. Grand Coliseum splits the difference at five colors, giving you the convenience of any-color fixing while letting you sidestep the bleed on turns where you only need a generic mana. The catch is the tapped clause, the single largest cost on the card: in a format where tempo matters, surrendering the turn you play it is a heavier tax than the trickle of damage. That is why it has always lived more comfortably in the slower, greedier corners of the game than at the fast end, where the lost tempo bites and a few points of self-inflicted damage do not. As a piece of fixing it is honest about what it is: a five-color tap-land that trades a turn of speed and an optional point of damage for the freedom to cast anything.
