Graf Rats
The meld mechanic's quiet experiment in horizontal assembly: a 2/1 whose entire upside lives in a single line of conditional text, contributing its half to a larger whole without that half meaning anything on its own. Most meld pairs at least look like a build-around, two payoffs that reward you for committing to both. This one is closer to a sleeper agent. The body brings no immediate value; its only function beyond attacking is a trigger that fires the instant you also own and control a creature named Midnight Scavengers, exiling both to assemble Chittering Host. The constraint that pays for the eventual payoff is severe: you need two specific cards, both on the battlefield, both yours, right as your combat opens. Whiff on the partner and you have an undersized attacker with dead-weight text. What softens the all-or-nothing structure is that the pairing is designed to be self-repairing: Midnight Scavengers, on entering, returns this rat from your graveyard to your hand, so the two cards actively reassemble each other rather than requiring you to hold both in hand at once. The catch is timing. Assembly is a triggered ability that goes on the stack when combat begins, which hands an opponent with instant-speed removal a clean window to kill one half in response and dissolve the whole plan before Chittering Host, a hasty menace threat, ever hits the battlefield.
