Removal becomes a worse deal against you. Kill the mana dork, the early beater, the chump fodder, and the spell that was supposed to be a clean one-for-one instead leaves a Saproling behind: a card-plus-a-token exchange that quietly tilts attrition in your favor. The word doing all the work is nontoken. The engine refuses to feed itself, so the Saprolings it makes die without replacement and the loop can never spiral; only your real creatures pay out. That restraint is the whole design. A token-producing payoff that triggered on its own creatures dying would have been a combo waiting to happen, so the nontoken clause fences the engine off before it can close on itself. What is left is a Golgari idea older than the keywords usually bolted to it: death as a resource, the graveyard as a staging ground, attrition as the win condition rather than the cost of doing business. It pairs cleanly with anything that wants disposable bodies (sacrifice outlets, fight effects, chump-blocking into an aggressive board) because each Saproling is both the casualty's replacement and a fresh thing to throw away again. What it does not do is generate advantage from nothing, and the design knows it; the tax it levies is on your opponent's interaction, not on the void.
