Golden Bear

Creature — Bear3 generic manaGreen mana

Call a creature a bear and a Magic player knows exactly what you mean: a green body whose whole identity is its stats, no text to track, no trigger to remember. This one wears a coat of golden paint over that pattern and nothing else. The 4/3 line gives away its origin in the beginner-facing product run, where the rules were pared down to creatures and spells that each did one legible thing. With instant-speed plays, the stack, and most keywords absent from that environment, a card had to be readable in full by someone holding their first hand; a body and two numbers was about as deep as the cards went. The sizing is tuned for that table: four power overpowers the small two- and three-drops a new player would have on the curve, while three toughness keeps it from being an untouchable finisher against the next creature up. The lack of any ability is the point, not an omission. Nothing about it dates, nothing about it confuses, and it never asks a learning player to do bookkeeping mid-combat. It is a teaching aid that outlived its lesson: a clean reference for what raw green stats cost, with no text on it to argue with.
