Goblin Raider

Creature — Goblin Warrior1 generic manaRed mana

The textbook 2/2 vanilla-with-a-drawback that early design used to teach the curve. A 2/2 for 1 generic manaRed mana is a fair body in red, but red was never meant to own clean two-power-two-toughness creatures without paying for them somehow, so surrendering the block is the tax: you get the aggressive stats, but you forfeit the defensive half of the card entirely. It is the same balancing lever that ran through a whole generation of red beaters, the principle that red's creatures are built to attack and that giving up the block is how you afford the rate. The Portal line stripped the rules language down to its barest form, and a creature like this earns its place there: it reads in one line, it models the idea that a stat line can come with a string attached, and it gives an aggressive deck a body that wants to be doing exactly what red wants to be doing anyway. Nothing about it has aged into relevance beyond that. It is a clean artifact of the era when "can't block" was a real cost worth printing on a common, before the curve filled in with creatures that hand you the same body and the defensive option for free.
