The whole payoff is hidden in the word "Gate." On its own, this is an Equipment that grants vigilance, menace, and exactly nothing in the power column, the kind of body buff that reads as a misprint until you count your lands. Build a manabase that leans on Gates and the +1/+0 scales without ceiling: every tapped, comes-into-play-slow dual you played for fixing converts into a point of evasive damage. That is the deliberate trade. Gates are some of the most painfully slow lands in the game, and this rewards you for hoarding them, turning a deckbuilding liability into an attack-step engine. The menace-plus-vigilance pairing is what makes the math matter: the equipped creature can't be chump-blocked by a single body and stays back to defend, so a wide Gate count threatens to close games and hold the fort in the same combat. Equipment is the right chassis for the effect, too, since it lets the bonus survive removal and hop onto a fresh threat after a board wipe, keeping your Gate investment liquid. It sits alongside the handful of cards that ask you to commit to Gates as a theme rather than treat them as incidental fixing; the Glaive is the one that converts that commitment into raw, evasive aggression.
