Gilded Light

Instant1 generic manaWhite mana

Protection against the singling-out spell, sold as a cantrip when nobody's pointing one at you. Granting yourself shroud at instant speed answers a narrow but recurring problem: the targeted removal aimed at your face, the player-targeting discard, the edict you can briefly sidestep by becoming an illegal target. Played reactively, it fizzles the spell on the stack at the cost of a card. The cycling clause rescues the dead draws: when nobody's hunting you, you spend two mana to draw a fresh card instead of holding a blank, so the matchups that turn the defensive half useless never leave the card rotting in hand. That dual identity, a reactive instant on one face and a cycling card on the other, is the bargain that lets a card this conditional earn a slot. Note the precise scope of the protection, too: the shroud lands on you, the player, not your board, so it shields you from spells and abilities that target you directly while leaving your creatures fully exposed and fully targetable by your own auras and pump. That seam matters, because the spell you cast it to dodge is one aimed at you in the first place. It is small, honest defensive technology built for the player who expects to be the target and wants insurance that never sits dead in hand.
