Giant Slug

Creature — Slug1 generic manaBlack mana

Five mana, activated, and the landwalk does not even arrive until your next upkeep: this is what evasion looked like before the mechanic was priced for play. The design is essentially flavor converted into rules text, building the slug's slow inexorability into the card by making the evasion a multi-turn investment rather than a printed keyword. By the time the ability resolves, you have spent seven mana across two turns to make a 1/1 unblockable for one combat, and only if the defender happens to control the basic type you named. Compare to the era's straight landwalkers (Scryb Sprites, Bog Wraith, Dwarven Warriors), which simply printed the keyword for a sliver of that investment, and the gap is the entire point: this was a set still negotiating what abilities should cost, and the activated-landwalk template never returned because the math never worked. The card survives now as a curio of early design philosophy, the kind of overcosted ability text that helped Wizards calibrate how much a conditional evasion clause is actually worth.

5 generic mana: At the beginning of your next upkeep, choose a basic land type. This creature gains landwalk of the chosen type until the end of that turn. (It can't be blocked as long as defending player controls a land of that type.)
