That gap matters; you trade a defensive blocker now for an evasive attacker later, and the lag means you cannot sacrifice the caterpillar to chump and immediately recoup an attacker the same combat. The token even carries its own name, Butterfly, an unusual touch for a creature token in this era when most tokens were generic. The whole card reads as a one-card life cycle: the green identity of growth and renewal compressed into a single permanent that consumes its larval self to produce something with wings. It is a flavor exercise first and a creature second, the kind of charming, narrow design that filled out mid-nineties expansions before token-matters strategies and sacrifice payoffs gave a card like this any reason to exist beyond the story it tells.
