Black recursion usually sells you precision: Raise Dead fetches the exact creature you want, Gravedigger pairs full target choice with a body. This swaps that agency for tribal density, and the trade only works if you have committed to the type. Crucially, the random pull selects from Zombie cards in the graveyard, ignoring everything else, so a stray non-Zombie never dilutes the return. The only way the trigger whiffs is an empty Zombie bin entirely. Reliability scales with how many Zombies you have already buried: in a deck that floods the type, every entry is a near-guaranteed second body, and the random clause becomes a formality rather than a gamble. A 2/2 for is unremarkable on its own, so the payoff hinges entirely on whether the deck is committed enough to make the return feel like a free Gravedigger. That commitment is the cost the random clause extracts: it asks you to build narrow before it pays out wide, rewarding the all-in shell where the graveyard is wall to wall Zombies. Where graveyard value normally buys consistency through selection, this buys it through sheer count. Outside a dedicated tribal list the pool is too thin to lean on, and that thinness is exactly the lever that keeps a recursive engine off the rails in fairer decks: the same density that makes it dependable in a pure Zombie list is precisely what those decks cannot supply.
