Gearshift Ace

The Pilot subtype was mostly a flavor label; the mechanic that mattered was crew, and most early crew creatures contributed nothing but their power score to flipping a Vehicle into a threat. This one carries its own first strike into the cockpit: crew a Vehicle with it, and that Vehicle swings or blocks with first strike for the turn. A creature whose own first-strike body looks unremarkable becomes the piece that lets a fat artifact win combat it would otherwise trade away or lose outright. The design quietly answers the central awkwardness of crew: Vehicles enter as bystanders that need a body's worth of power to do anything, and the bodies you feed them usually stay home anyway. Here the body and the Vehicle are working the same shift. The grant resolves as part of crewing, which is the wrinkle worth knowing: because you can crew at instant speed, you can wait until an opponent declares attackers, then crew with this on the spot and hold the Vehicle back as a first-striking blocker that eats an attacker without taking a scratch. The pilot, not just the machine, brings something to the fight, and that is the cleanest version of an idea the crew mechanic kept circling without quite committing to: rewarding which creature you put in the seat rather than treating every body as interchangeable fuel.
