Firebreathing on a dragon is an old red template, and this is its cleanest budget execution: an evasive body whose toughness never moves, only its punch. The repeatable : +1/+0 is the engine that defines an entire class of red flyers, turning leftover mana into reach and converting a board stall into a lethal swing. The catch is structural and deliberate: the buff is power only, so a flyer that has pumped four times still has the same fragile two toughness, dying to any blocker or burn it could have dodged. That asymmetry is the whole bargain. Dragons want to be priced as finishers, and a creature that can dump unlimited mana into damage is a finisher waiting on a full board; pinning all that growth to power keeps it from also being a wall, so the card forces a choice between attacking with it and holding mana up to defend with it. The lineage runs deep on both sides of that decision: Shivan Dragon set firebreathing as a top-end bomb, while this trims the rate down to a four-mana flyer that still threatens to end games if the mana flows. It is the archetypal mana sink with wings, the kind of card a red deck plays not because four mana for a 2/2 is a good rate, but because every untapped Mountain in the late game is another point of evasive damage.
