The text reads neutral: all damage from all sources doubles, yours and theirs alike. The reality is anything but, because the player who deploys it is usually the player whose clock was already faster, and doubling a faster clock ends games before the symmetry has time to bite back. That asymmetry-by-tempo is the load-bearing idea here, and it is why a four-mana enchantment that helps your opponent's burn as much as your own still reads as a red card rather than a neutral one. The triple-pip cost enforces that commitment: this is not a splash, it locks you into red, and it pays off a board already built to win the race.

Its second life came as the engine half of combo rather than the accelerant half of aggro. Pair a doubler with a single point of redirectable or pinging damage and the math runs to lethal in a hurry; the card became a known quantity in any deck looking to convert one small trigger into a one-shot kill. That dual identity (race-finisher in the deck that drew first, combo piece in the deck that built around it) is what has kept it printed and remembered while flashier red enchantments came and went. The effect was clean enough that Wizards has revisited the doubling space many times since, but rarely with this card's blunt, both-edged honesty.
