Most self-returning creatures ask you to have them on the battlefield or in hand; this one does its work from the graveyard, watching your other creatures die and offering to buy itself back for a small tax each time. That inverts the usual sacrifice-fodder relationship. The Forebear is not the thing you feed to an aristocrats engine; it is the thing the engine keeps handing back to you, one dead creature at a time. Each return costs , so the loop is not free and not fast, but it is repeatable in a way that makes a single copy behave like a slow, self-refilling threat: cast it, trade it away or sacrifice it, and let the next creature's death fund its trip back to hand. The design lands squarely in white's ongoing flirtation with go-wide sacrifice value, where the color wants recursion but has to pay a real cost for it rather than looping for zero the way black often does. The tax is the whole balancing mechanism; without it, a 3/1 that resurrects itself off every death trigger would be miserable to play against.
