Funeral March

Enchantment — Aura1 generic manaBlack manaBlack mana

The design idea here is a delayed tax on death, not a deterrent against it. Most aura-based removal of this era tried to neutralize a creature directly: shrink it, immobilize it, or make it unattractive to attack with. This one does nothing while the creature lives. It triggers the moment the enchanted creature leaves the battlefield, by any means, and charges that player a second creature as the toll. The structural quirk is that "leaves the battlefield" is permissive, not punitive: the aura does not stop the opponent from killing or bouncing their own creature, it just makes them pay twice when they do. The math nets even rather than ahead; if the enchanted creature trades in combat, you have spent two cards (the aura and your attacker or blocker) to make them spend two (the enchanted creature and the sacrifice). What you get for that parity is reach the aura never had on its own: it converts any departure into an additional edict, regardless of how the creature leaves. The cost is the same one every aura of the period carried: it is card disadvantage by default, dead until the body it is attached to actually leaves, and vulnerable to a creature that simply lives forever. The controller chooses what to sacrifice, so a board full of chaff blunts it entirely. It reads as an early experiment in punishing death rather than preventing it, incidental edict design from a corner of Magic's history more often cited for its rough edges than its mechanics.
