Foul-Tongue Shriek

InstantBlack mana

A one-mana drain priced entirely off your board state and timing. The card does nothing with an empty battlefield and nearly nothing in the early turns, so its value scales with a question most spells don't ask: how many creatures are attacking right now. That phrasing matters. Because it counts attackers rather than creatures, it lives in the combat step, after declare-attackers, when a wide aggressive board is committed and the opponent is already bracing for damage. Cast it then and the life swing arrives as a second strike: the lifegain offsets a race you might otherwise be losing, and the drain can finish a wall-up opponent who survived the combat math itself. The design is honest about what it's for. It gives a go-wide black deck reach, turning a stalled board of attackers into lethal even when blocks have neutralized the actual combat. The downside is the same as its appeal: it is a dead card in any deck not flooding the board, and a top-deck in the late game when your attackers have been ground away. Its payoff belongs to the aggressor who has already won the width war, and it punishes anyone hoping to draw out of a bad spot. As burn-by-attacker effects go, it sits at the cheaper, swingier end, trading guaranteed output for the chance at a much larger hit when your team is at its peak.
